A Matter of Managed Growth

Main Street, Hendersonville NC

Many Hendersonville residents are concerned, as am I, about growth in our city. I want growth and growth for a community is healthy. Growth brings jobs, new services, more opportunities for our citizens.

But growth must be managed and to manage it there must a plan to which to align it. Kudos to our City Planning Department for undertaking a completed revised Comprehensive Plan (closely timed with the rewriting of the County plan). It is this, along with clearer, and perhaps more restrictive zoning that we can have the tools to guide strong, balanced, and healthy growth that serves all of us well in terms of density, housing, industry, parks, green space, tree management, and overall quality of life.

One of the reasons I want to serve on City Council is to be connected to this planning process for the future as it kicks in next year.

Mike, thank you for posting this, growth is one of the toughest dilemmas Hendersonville faces. “Managed Growth” for a comprehensive plan is definitely the best start. So many little details to work out, and not everybody is going to be happy. How do you alleviate traffic without making everything a 4-laner? How do you create more housing without cutting down all the trees? How do you attract more business without hurting the mom and pop shops? And on and on. I think you said it best, “Keep it more of what we love of Hendersonville”. Thank you for your commitment to this wonderful little American town.
