Gossip is one of the oldest and most destructive of vices and it continues to devastate today.
What is gossip? Simply put, it’s the spreading of harmful and/or misinformation. Whether at the bridge party, the coffee maker, or the dinner table. Add technology and gossip platforms like Facebook, Tik Tok, Instagram, and a host of others and you have a global “party line.”
And today, that party line is being used by those who delight in confusion, contradiction, and obfuscation. Whether the topic is politics, COVID-19, BLM, Antifa, etc. the sheer volume of lies is beyond imagination. And it’s more than “news” events. The latest promotion, hire, RIF, policy at your company are all fair game for the malicious mouthpieces.
It was Vladimir Lenin who said (paraphrased), “With the help of useful idiots, we can change the course of history and sow discord among our enemies.” What is a “useful idiot?” you ask. Simply those who spread untruth–whether by mouth or the “share” button.
